2. How to Handle Your Equipment During an Emergency
Power outage:
- Oxygen concentrator: Switch to your backup oxygen cylinder if you have one. Notify your electric company that you use medical equipment so they can prioritize restoring your power. Call us to arrange additional support.
- Oxygen cylinders: Keep a backup cylinder on hand and know how to open it and set the flow. Conserve oxygen by resting and reducing activity.
- Other equipment: If safe, leave equipment plugged in so it restarts when power returns. Do not use any equipment that appears damaged – call us.
Evacuation:
- Take only essential equipment if it is safe to do so and you are able to transport it.
- Bring your oxygen cylinder and enough supplies for 24 hours if possible.
- Call us as soon as you are safe so we can help coordinate your equipment and care.
Fire safety:
- Do not smoke or allow open flames near oxygen equipment.
- Keep oxygen and equipment away from heat, oil, and grease.
- If there is a fire, leave the home and call 911. Do not try to move oxygen equipment during a fire.
General equipment safety:
- Use equipment only as instructed.
- Keep equipment clean, dry, and away from water.
- If equipment is damaged or not working properly, stop using it and call us.
3. If You Miss a Treatment or Delivery
- If a scheduled delivery or treatment does not arrive, or you miss an appointment, call us as soon as possible so we can reschedule.
- Florida patients should call Jay Home Medical at (904) 733-3026.
- Pennsylvania patients should call Heron Medical at 610-259-9700.
- Oxygen patients: Do not let your oxygen supply run out. Call us when your supply is low or if a delivery is missed so we can arrange backup supply.
- If you are admitted to the hospital or will be away from home, notify us so we can adjust your deliveries and equipment.
